Broken Key Extraction
The apartment key snapped mid-turn, leaving the cylinder twisted halfway between locked and open. The building manager's spare is somewhere across town and nobody else has a copy.
Broken Key Extraction
In plain words
Broken key extraction is the removal of a snapped key piece from a lock so it can go back to work. It is done with slim hooks and spiral extractors that slide into the keyway beside the fragment, catch the cuts in the blade and draw it out the way it went in. First, the locksmith confirms you are entitled to the door or vehicle. Once the piece is out, the cylinder is inspected and cleaned, since a healthy lock does not rule out a key that was already worn, bent or fatigued, and a fresh key is cut so you are not relying on the copy that failed.
How the visit goesYou were locking up on the way out when the key broke in the lock. Now the door is unlocked, a piece of key is jammed in the cylinder, and you were already running late for work.

How the visit goes
Confirming the lock is yours to open
Extraction is an entry service in everything but name, so it starts the way a lockout does: the locksmith establishes that whoever is asking is entitled to the door, padlock or vehicle. For a home that means photo identification plus a document linking you to the address: a lease, a utility statement, or the property manager vouching for you. For a car it is the registration or ownership papers and matching identification. If your wallet is behind the door, say so, and the check is finished once you are inside. It takes a minute, protects every neighbour on the street, and is a sign you have called the right kind of tradesperson.
Drawing it out with a hook extractor
Every keyway has grooves, called wards, that run along its length above and below the blade. A hook extractor is a slim strip of spring steel thin enough to ride in one of those grooves beside the fragment. The locksmith slides it in past the broken piece, rotates it slightly so the barbed tip catches a cut in the blade, and draws it back out in a straight line. The pins are lifted clear as the piece passes them, exactly as they are when a key is withdrawn. It is a patient, felt process, and the cylinder is untouched by it.
A key cut from the pattern, not the wear
You leave with a key that was cut to the lock's original specification rather than traced from the tired blade that just failed. That difference shows every time you use it: it seats fully, lifts each pin cleanly and turns without a wiggle. Two or three copies made from that fresh cut give you spares that are as good as the first. The old bent or thinning keys that shared the ring are worth retiring now, because a key that has started to bend has started to crack, and the next one to snap will be one of them.

What affects the quote
Same fees day, night or weekend
1Rekeying other doors to match
If the cylinder ends up rekeyed or replaced, matching the other exterior locks to the new key is priced per cylinder, and simplest while the locksmith is already there.
2Number of keys cut
Copies are counted individually. One replacement for a single occupant and four for a household are different lines, and you choose the number on the spot.
3When you call
Whatever hour you call about a broken key extraction — morning, evening, a weekend or a holiday — the amount is the same. Locksmiths are reachable at any time, and the exact figure is confirmed on site once the technician has seen how deep the fragment sits.
Broken Key Extraction: questions
What should I do while I wait for the locksmith?
Put both halves of the key somewhere safe, note whether the door or vehicle is locked, and leave the keyway alone. If it is bitter cold, keep the storm door closed so the lock is not taking freezing rain. Have identification ready, or vehicle papers for a car. If the door is open, stay near it. That is all; the extraction goes smoother for a lock nobody has poked at.
Can a new key be made from the two broken halves?
Usually. Laid end to end, the halves show the full set of cuts and identify the blank, and a locksmith reads them with a gauge and cuts a fresh key to those depths on a code machine. That is better than tracing the broken blade on a duplicator, because a worn key copied is a worn key repeated. If a spare or the key code exists, that is used instead.
Should I rekey or replace the lock afterwards?
Only if the inspection finds a reason. A clean cylinder with sound pins goes straight back to work with a new key. Rekeying makes sense when the pins are worn and sticking, or when a lost or unaccounted key shares the same cut. Replacement is for a cylinder that is corroded, cracked or of a grade that will keep eating keys. Each is offered as its own decision, not bundled in.
