Straight answers about locks
Good advice saves a visit sometimes and makes the next one shorter. We have written down what we tell homeowners, tenants, drivers and business owners when they ask what they should know, from key control to choosing hardware for a busy door.

Lockout Services
What should I have ready when I call about a lockout?
The address and which door you are outside of, what kind of lock is on it as far as you can tell, and where the key is: inside, lost, broken or simply refusing to turn. Mention whether the door is a rental, whether anyone is inside, and whether the lock is electronic. If you have photo identification on you, say so; if not, say that too so the verification route is agreed before the locksmith arrives. Home Lockout Service
What should I have ready when I call?
The address and unit number, which door you are outside, what the lock looks like, and where the keys are: with someone, lost, broken or simply refusing. Say whether there is an alarm or a card reader on the door, who can disarm or confirm your authority, and whether the building has a property manager. If you can send a photo of the lock and the door edge, the right cylinders and cores come on the first trip. Business Lockout Service
What should I do while I wait for the locksmith?
Put both halves of the key somewhere safe, note whether the door or vehicle is locked, and leave the keyway alone. If it is bitter cold, keep the storm door closed so the lock is not taking freezing rain. Have identification ready, or vehicle papers for a car. If the door is open, stay near it. That is all; the extraction goes smoother for a lock nobody has poked at. Broken Key Extraction
How long does a break-in repair take?
It depends on how much gave way. A new lockset and a reinforced strike on a sound frame is a modest job. Bonding a split jamb, sleeving a crushed door edge, reinforcing the hinges and rekeying several cylinders takes longer, and a shattered frame means a securing visit now and a second visit after the carpenter. The locksmith gives a sense of the time once the damage has been seen, and the opening is secured before leaving even when a part has to be ordered. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks
How is rekeying different from replacing the lock?
Rekeying keeps your existing deadbolt or handle set and gives it a new key, commonly by changing the pins inside, though some cylinders reset a different way. Replacing removes the whole lock or cylinder and fits new hardware. Rekeying suits locks that are in good condition and simply need a fresh key. Replacement is the better call for hardware that is worn or damaged, built to a low grade, on a keyway the other doors cannot share, or due for a change of style or a keypad. Lock Rekeying
I rent. Can I have a deadbolt installed on my unit door?
You can, with a conversation first. Tenancy rules in this province expect a tenant to have the landlord's consent before changing locks and expect the landlord to hold a key, so ask in writing and share the plan. Many landlords welcome a proper bolt. The locksmith can key the new cylinder to the building's existing key where the keyway allows, and leave a note of the model and keys cut for the building manager. Deadbolt Installation
My deadbolt only locks if I push the door. Will a new lock cure that?
The push is a sign the bolt and the strike pocket are out of line, which is a door and frame matter more than a lock fault. A new deadbolt is welcome if the old one is worn, but the visit also adjusts the strike, deepens the pocket or tightens hinges so the bolt throws freely with the door simply closed. Done together, the door locks with a fingertip and the new hardware works as designed. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
Can a modern cylinder be fitted to my old mortise lock?
Often, on cases that already take a threaded cylinder. Mortise cylinders are made in standard thread sizes and lengths with different cam shapes, and a new one is selected to match the case and the door thickness. That gives you keys cut on a machine and the option of keying the door alike with the rest of the house. A bit-key case has no cylinder to swap; its keys are made on the bench instead. High Security Locks
Do drop safes or under-counter cash safes work the same way as a larger floor safe?
The identification step is the same regardless of size, but the lock inside is not assumed from the safe's size: a small drop safe or under-counter unit can carry anything from a basic keypad to a high-security lock, so each is identified on its own before manipulation, reset or a combination change proceeds, with the same care around authority and aftercare applying equally. Safe Opening & Combination Change
Can more than one person have their own code?
Yes, on an electronic keypad that supports multiple users, each person can be given a separate code rather than everyone sharing one, which also makes it simple to remove a single code later without resetting the whole lock. A mechanical dial lock, by contrast, has one combination for everyone who needs it, so a change in who has access there means changing that one combination. Safe Installation & Servicing
How do I order extra keys later?
An authorised person contacts the locksmith who holds your system, quotes the system reference, and the key is cut from code and numbered into the register. Some systems use a physical authorisation card, others an online validation, and business systems often require a signature that matches one on file. The key is collected or delivered, and the record shows the new total. It is deliberately not something a stranger with your key can do. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks
How many keys should we have cut?
Count the people who need each group, add one spare per group for the safe, and stop there. Extra keys cut 'just in case' are the ones that end up unaccounted for. Because the keys are cut to code from the pinning records, more can be produced later to the same standard, so there is no need to stockpile on the day. Restricted keys are ordered by the named signatories when needed. Commercial Rekeying
How is accountability maintained when several people hold different levels of keys?
Through the chart and issuance log rather than memory. Each level is tied to named roles or people, each key is marked to reflect its level rather than the door it opens, and any change of hands is recorded with a signed receipt. That record names every authorized holder for a door, though it can only account for a key that was never copied, loaned or picked up by someone outside that list. Master Key System Design
Can we see a log of who entered and when?
Yes. The controller keeps a running record of which credential was presented at which door and when, available to the administrator at any time, not only after an incident. It can be checked for a specific door, date, or credential, which is useful for everyday questions as much as investigating something unusual, though it identifies the credential used rather than confirming who was physically holding it. Access Control Installation
What happens with a pair of doors instead of one?
It depends on the pair. Some latch independently and need nothing extra. Where the hardware calls for a set closing order, a coordinator lets the two leaves close in the right sequence, letting the active leaf's device seat properly into a strike carried on the inactive leaf, or into an astragal. Alternatively, the centre mullion can be removed and a vertical-rod device fitted to each leaf, turning the pair into one wide exit. Whichever applies, both leaves are tested working together, not one at a time. Panic & Exit Hardware

Car Keys
I have lost my only key. Can a locksmith make a new one at the roadside?
For most cars, yes. After the car is opened, the door cylinder is decoded to read the cuts, or the key code is drawn from the vehicle records against your proof of ownership, and a blade is cut in the van. A transponder key or fob is then programmed through the diagnostic port so the engine will start. Some newer or high-security models need dealer-only parts; you are told that up front rather than after. Car Lockout Service
Can the key I lost still start my car?
Until it is erased, yes, because the immobilizer still recognizes its chip. During the programming session the locksmith can remove every key from the car's memory except the ones in your hand, and unpair the old remote as well. After that the lost key is a blade that opens a door at most, and nothing else. If that blade worries you, changing or rekeying every mechanical cylinder it operates, doors and ignition, plus a trunk, tailgate, fuel door or glovebox where the car has one, finishes the job. Car Key Replacement
Will the spare include the remote buttons?
If the original has remote buttons and you want the spare to match, yes: the new key or fob is programmed to the vehicle's receiver so locking, unlocking and any other remote function respond the same way from either key. If a simpler spare is preferred instead, the remote portion can be left out while the chip that starts the car is still fully recognized. Spare Car Key Duplication
Is fixing a lost key different from just adding a spare?
Yes. Adding a spare while every existing fob still works only involves registering the new one. A lost key involves that same registration plus removing the missing fob's authorization following that vehicle's own procedure, since leaving it active means whoever has it can still use it; some vehicles also relearn the fobs you keep, and a mechanical blade in the lost fob is ruled out by rekeying the matching lock. The two situations share a first step but not a last one. Key Fob Programming
